Playa del Carmen car rental: Your Way Into the Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen packs beach, jungle, and nightlife into one stretch of the Yucatán Peninsula, and a car rental in Playa del Carmen is what lets you move between all three on your own schedule. Instead of booking a different tour for every cenote or beach club, you pick up the keys once and decide the rest as you go — that's the whole point of choosing Playa del Carmen car rental over shuttles and taxis with unpredictable rates. Whether you flew into Cancún or arrived overland, having your own car in Playa del Carmen turns a packed itinerary into something you can actually control.

Picking Up Your Car in Downtown Playa del Carmen

Our car rental in downtown Playa del Carmen location keeps you close to Fifth Avenue, so you're a short walk from restaurants and shops right after you sign your contract. Unlike many rental companies tucked away outside town, this rental location is built for travelers who want their car in Playa del Carmen without a long transfer first. There are nearby parking lots if you'd rather explore downtown on foot before heading out on the road, and the entire pickup process is designed to take a few minutes, not an hour of paperwork.

This matters more than it sounds like it should. A lot of car rental locations near Riviera Maya beach towns sit far enough from the action that you need a taxi just to reach the rental counter — which defeats the purpose of renting a car in the first place. Being downtown means your rental in Playa del Carmen starts the moment you land, not after a second trip across town.

Choosing the Right Vehicle (sedan or van rental) in Playa del Carmen

A compact car covers most trips around town, but if you're traveling with family or diving gear, a van rental in Playa del Carmen gives you the extra room for boards, coolers, and luggage. Both come with unlimited mileage when you book directly through our site, and both work well whether you need the car for a weekend or a long-term stay along the coast. If your plans are still loose, it's worth booking the smaller category first — categories are easier to upgrade at the counter than to downsize once you've committed to a van rental in Playa del Carmen you don't really need.

Driving the Riviera Maya: What to Know Before You Go

Once you're on the road, remember that speed limits along the Riviera Maya drop sharply near small towns — often down to 30 or 40 km/h through populated stretches, even on the main highway. Topes (speed bumps) show up with little warning outside of town centers, so it pays to slow down early rather than brake hard at the last second.

None of this should discourage you from driving — the roads connecting the Riviera Maya are well maintained and clearly signed. It's simply a different rhythm than highway driving back home, and a little patience through town centers goes a long way.

The deposit is held only on a physical credit card under the name of the person who booked the reservation. With our Disfruta al Máximo coverage (0% deductible), it starts at $1,500 MXN for cars, SUVs, and vans — one of the lowest deposits in the market, and it accepts major brands including American Express. For SUVs in the Premium or 4x4 categories, the deposit is $5,000 MXN instead.

For paying the rental itself at the counter, debit cards work too; it's only the security deposit that requires a physical credit card, not a debit card. If you book through a third party instead of directly with MEX, keep in mind the deposit tends to run higher — sometimes up to $50,000 or $100,000 MXN, depending on the coverage the third party included — so booking directly is usually the simpler route if a low deposit matters to your budget.

The minimum age with MEX Rent A Car is 18 years old, which is often lower than the 21-year threshold you might expect from other rental companies back home. Drivers between 18 and 24 do pay an additional charge of $343.58 MXN per day.

An additional driver is $192.68 MXN per day and must meet the same requirements as the main renter — valid ID, a current license, and no exceptions on documentation. If more than one person in your group might end up behind the wheel during the trip, it's worth adding them at pickup rather than after the fact.

You'll need a valid driver's license that stays current for your entire stay — your regular driver's license from home works, as long as it's still valid on every day of the rental period, not just the day you pick up the car. If it isn't printed in the Roman alphabet, bring an international driving permit alongside it; the permit on its own isn't enough; it has to accompany your original license.

Full details on documentation, coverage, and what counts as a valid license are in our Terms and Conditions, which is worth a quick read before you fly in if this is your first time renting in Mexico.

With Disfruta al Máximo, third-party liability protection extends up to $3,000,000 MXN, plus per-occupant medical expenses up to $40,000 MXN and roadside assistance up to $5,000 MXN per incident — flat tires, a dead battery, or running out of gas on a longer route. It's the option that gives the most peace of mind if your trip covers several beaches and long stretches of highway in one go.

Lighter coverage tiers are available too if you'd rather keep the daily rate lower and accept a deductible, but most travelers driving unfamiliar roads for the first time find the 0% deductible option easier to budget around, since there's no surprise repair bill waiting at drop-off.

Book Your Car Rental in Playa del Carmen Today

Whether you're after a quick weekend at the beach or a longer route through the Riviera Maya, our downtown car rental locations in Playa del Carmen keep the process simple from pickup to drop-off — clear pricing, a low deposit, and coverage that actually explains what it protects. That's the difference we're going for: not just another rent-a-car counter, but one that treats a straightforward rental as the standard, not the upsell.

Heading further down the coast afterward? Check out our office in Tulum Downtown too, or if the ferry to Cozumel is part of your plan, our Cozumel Airport location can pick up where this leg of the trip ends.
