Cozumel Ferry and Car Rentals: Your Island Trip Starts Here
Stepping off the ferry in Cozumel and finding your car already waiting changes the whole trip. With a car rental at the Cozumel ferry port location just steps from where the ferries from Playa del Carmen dock, you skip the taxi line and start exploring the island the moment your feet touch the pier. From the turquoise reefs of Palancar to the quiet beaches on the island's east side, having your own rental car means the schedule is yours, not a tour operator's.
MEX Rent A Car brings Cozumel ferry and car rentals together under one roof: our office sits right at the dock, so picking up your vehicle is the first thing you do on the island, not an errand you handle later. Whether you're island-hopping for the day or staying a full week, this location makes the whole process simple from the moment you arrive.
What Documents Are Required to Rent a Car at the Cozumel Dock?
Before you drive off, there are a few documents required to rent a vehicle with us. You'll need a valid driver's license — a national license is enough if it's printed in the Roman alphabet; otherwise, you'll also need an international driver permit valid for your full rental period. You'll also need a physical credit card in your name and to meet the minimum age to rent, which is 18 years. Full details on documents, coverage, and the security deposit are in our Terms and Conditions.
Your security deposit is placed directly on your credit card, and the amount can vary depending on the coverage you choose: with our zero-deductible Full Coverage, it can be as low as $1,500 MXN for cars, SUVs, and vans — one of the lowest holds in the market. Drivers between 18 and 24 years old are charged a daily young-driver fee, which is also spelled out in our rental agreement.
Cozumel Jeep Rental: Pick the Right Vehicle for Your Cozumel Plans
Not every day on the island calls for the same car. If you're sticking to San Miguel's downtown streets, running errands, or keeping your luggage light, an economy car is the most practical pick — easier to park and lighter on fuel. If your plan involves dirt roads to less-crowded reefs, or hauling snorkel and dive gear, our Cozumel Jeep rental gives you the freedom to go beyond the main road without a second thought.
Both options are available right at our dock office, so you can pick the vehicle that fits each day of your trip instead of committing to one type of car for the whole stay. Our rental rates vary by vehicle category and season, so it's worth comparing options before you book.
Cozumel Car Rental: Airport or Ferry Dock?
Cozumel welcomes visitors in two main ways: by air, through the island's international airport, and by sea, on the ferry from Playa del Carmen that docks right downtown. If your trip starts by plane, you can also pick up your vehicle at our Cozumel Airport office. But if you're arriving by boat, a Cozumel car rental near the ferry saves you the extra ride into town — your rental car is waiting practically where you disembark.
Explore Cozumel and the Riviera Maya on Your Own Schedule
With your car ready at the dock, you can cover the whole island — from the reefs along the western coast to the wilder beaches on the east side. And if your itinerary includes crossing back to Playa del Carmen, having a rental car also means you can explore the Riviera Maya on your own terms once you're back on the mainland, no tour bus required. Check out more ideas in our guide to the best of the Riviera Maya.
A Few Tips Before You Book Your Cozumel Ferry Dock Rental
A little planning makes the pickup faster and keeps surprises off your rental agreement. Cozumel's cruise and ferry traffic peaks between December and April, and rental rates climb along with demand, so booking a few weeks ahead usually locks in a better price and guarantees the vehicle category you actually want.
- Compare coverage levels before you add extras at the counter — our zero-deductible option bundles tires and glass into one flat daily rate, so there's less to calculate later.
- Photograph the vehicle at pickup. A quick walk-around before you drive off protects you if any pre-existing marks come up when you return it.
- Keep your documents together. Your credit card, driver's license, and photo ID get checked again at the counter, so having them ready speeds up the whole pickup.
- Ask about your rental period upfront. Extending a day or two once you're already on the island is easy, but it's simpler to confirm return time when you book.
1. What do I need to rent a car in Cozumel?
To pick up your car rental at the Cozumel ferry port, you'll need an official photo ID (a passport is easiest for international visitors), a valid driver's license — national or international — a physical credit card in your name, and to meet the minimum age of 18. If your card isn't in your own name or you're missing one of these documents, our staff at the dock can walk you through your options before you commit to a vehicle category. You can check the complete list of documents and coverage details in our Terms and Conditions.
2. What's the minimum age to rent a car with MEX?
The minimum age to rent is 18 years. Drivers between 18 and 24 are charged an additional daily fee, so if you're traveling with someone 25 or older who can be listed as the main driver, you can avoid that extra charge.
3. Can I rent a car with an international driver's license?
Yes. If your driver's license isn't printed in the Roman alphabet, you'll need to bring a valid international driver's permit that covers your full rental period. If your license already uses the Roman alphabet, your national license is enough on its own.
4. Does MEX have an office at the Cozumel ferry dock?
Yes — our office sits right where the ferries from Playa del Carmen come in, so you can pick up your rental car as soon as you step off the boat. If you're flying in instead, we also have an office at the Cozumel Airport.
